About

The Altivar 18 is a compact Telemecanique variable speed controller for asynchronous motors.

The range splits into two supply families across 17 references and five mechanical sizes. M2 covers 200-240 V single phase from 0.37 to 2.2 kW and 200-230 V three phase from 3 to 7.5 kW. N4 is 380-460 V three phase only, from 0.75 to 15 kW. Output runs 0.5 to 320 Hz, switching frequency is adjustable from 2.2 to 12 kHz, and transient current is 150 per cent of the controller nominal current for 60 seconds.

Schneider discontinued the range on 1 November 2020 and names the Altivar 320 as the replacement. Two details save time on an inbound unit: fan life is put at 3 to 5 years, which every surviving drive has long passed, and the top blanking cover is a self-adhesive film, so a unit arriving without it is set to IP20 and a 50 degrees C ambient rather than damaged.

Key Features

  • Output frequency 0.5 to 320 Hz, and 40 to 320 Hz nominal with a special motor

  • Switching frequency adjustable from 2.2 to 12 kHz

  • 150% of the controller nominal current for 60 seconds

  • Braking torque 30% of nominal motor torque, or up to 150% with the optional brake resistor

  • Motor thermal protection by integrated I2t calculation

  • IP31, or IP20 with the top blanking cover removed, which also lifts the permitted ambient from 40 to 50 degrees C
