About

The Mentor II is Control Techniques’ digital DC drive, a fully microprocessor-controlled thyristor converter for shunt-wound DC motors. Fourteen armature ratings run from 25 A to 1850 A, each sold either as a single quadrant drive or as the four quadrant R version for fully regenerative reversing duty. M210 is the 210 A drive, M210R is its four quadrant version, and up to M825 the two share a footprint.

Supplies from 208 V to 480 Vac are accepted, with 525 V, 575 V or 660 V to special order on M350 and above. Armature output reaches 1.15 times the supply voltage on single quadrant drives and 1.05 times on regenerative ones. Overload is 150 per cent for 30 seconds.

The integral field controller gives 8 A up to M210, 10 A to M825 and 20 A above that, and the MD29 coprocessor card runs user application code. Nidec maps the Mentor II directly to the Mentor MP.

Key Features

  • Fourteen armature ratings from 25 A to 1850 A DC

  • Single quadrant or four quadrant regenerative version of every rating

  • 150% overload capacity for 30 seconds

  • 0.1% speed holding for a 100% load change on tachometer feedback

  • Armature voltage, DC tachometer or encoder speed feedback

  • MD29 coprocessor card, programmable logic gates, comparators and timers that can remove the need for a PLC

  • Built-in RS485 serial communications, with Profibus-DP, DeviceNet, Interbus-S, Modbus and CTNet option cards

ConfigurationsSingle-ended (forward run only) or four-quadrant (fully reversible)
Input Voltage (L1, L2, L3 Main Power To Thyristor Bridge)208 V to 480 Vac, -5% / +10%, standard. 525 V, 575 V or 660 Vac ± 10% to special order on M350 and above
Maximum Recommended Motor VoltageVarm = 1.15 x Vsupply on the single quadrant (non-regenerative) drives, and 1.05 x Vsupply on the four quadrant (regenerative) drives
Auxiliary Power Supply Voltage (E1, E2, E3)Balanced 3-phase 3-wire, 45 Hz to 62 Hz, maximum 480 V +10%. With the higher voltage (525 V, 660 V) versions the maximum power supply voltage is also 480 V +10%. Input to the control (electronic) circuits: standard 2-wire, 220 V -10% to 480 V +10%; with North American field bridge 3-wire, 220 V -10% to 480 V +10%. E1 and E3 must be connected to the same phases as L1 and L3
Output Supplies And References (Short-Circuit Proof)10 V reference ± 5% with 10 mA drive capability; encoder supply 300 mA at 5 V, 12 V or 15 V selectable; +24 V supply 200 mA for relays. All outputs are wire-proof and unaffected by accidental short circuiting
Armature Output Current (Models Listed Below)25 to 1850 Adc
Maximum Continuous Input Current (Models Listed Below)21 to 1540 Aac
Ambient Temperature And HumidityRated ambient temperature 40 °C (104 °F); rated maximum altitude 1000 m (3200 ft); storage temperature range -40 °C to +55 °C (-40 °F to 131 °F); humidity requirement non-condensing
DeratingWhere the site is above 1000 m (3200 ft), reduce the normal full load current by 1.0% for each additional 100 m (320 ft), up to a maximum of 4000 m. Where the local ambient temperature is above 40 °C (104 °F), derate by 1.5% per °C up to 55 °C (0.75% per °F up to 131 °F)
Enclosure Ingress ProtectionConstructed in accordance with European IP00 specification and suitable for mounting in NEMA ingress-protected enclosures. The drive must be protected against moisture and conductive contamination, and is intended for use in pollution degree 2 environments
Short Circuit CurrentSuitable in a circuit capable of delivering no more than 10000 RMS symmetrical amperes for M25-M210 and M25R-M210R, and 18000 RMS symmetrical amperes for M350-M825 and M350R-M825R, at 480 V +10% maximum
Product StatusSuperseded, with Mentor MP named as the replacement in Nidec's own migration table. Inverter Drive Repair still services these units

Fourteen armature ratings are listed, each available as a single quadrant drive or as the four quadrant R version. The kW and HP figures are typical motor ratings at a 400 V armature, and the Control Techniques brochure footnotes them "This rating may be increased at higher armature voltage", so contact Inverter Drive Repair if you need confirmation for a specific armature voltage.
